ZONING OF LAND FOR INTERGRATED DEVELOPMENT

The Geographic Information System unit of the department of Agriculture and Land Affairs is busy with the process of zoning the province to
determine land with high agricultural potential.

This process is aimed at assisting the integrated development planning in the province in line with the Land Development Objectives.

Our scientists are working with all departments, district councils and local authorities in this process in order for us to be informed of
high agricultural potential land at local, district and provincial level.

We already have interim reports of the Amatola district and the Kei and we hope to finalise all the remaining districts in the near future.

High agricultural land is a limited resource in the province whilst successful economic future of the agricultural sector and indeed the
province as a whole, depends on the careful identification of land potential and the protection of this land for productive purposes.

This information will give us a comprehensive understanding of soil types, climatic conditions, annual rainfall, slope gradients,
population density, water resources and vegetation types from various districts in the province. Combination of this information used in
conjunction with each other will assist us to determine the potential and limitations of areas for agricultural purposes.

This matter should be taken seriously as a permanent damage to limited soil resources is increasing and we will review the existing
legislation in the province to enable support to be given to the more effective control of soil erosion.
